Brunei football has just gained another fan, this time in the form of Deyan Gergov, the winner of the first Allianz Football World Reporter competition.
Deyan, chosen from some 48,000 other applicants, is scheduled to stop at nine countries on four different continents over the span of four weeks, before wrapping up his experience with the UEFA Champions League final clash between Chelsea and Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena in Munich on May 19.
During his journey, Deyan will be doubling as a reporter to get first hand experience and exclusive insights into the world of football around the globe.
The Bulgarian made his sixth stop in the capital last Thursday and departed for the Netherlands yesterday afternoon.
"I had a great time here in Brunei. We went to the professional football youth training programme (Projek Ikan Pusu)," said the 26-year-old.
"Those kids are the future stars here, and I also had the chance to play futsal with the local futsal club (Indera SC) here. We had a lot of fun.
"I had a good time in Brunei, the spicy breakfast, boat ride at Kampong Ayer, hiking at Bukit Shahbandar, live radio interviews with RTB... I've never done that before, it was simply great.
"It is very hot and humid in Brunei, I find it hard to breathe and over time I got used to it. How can the people play football in the weather. I admire the people here for that," he added.
Present at the press conference was professional reporter for the Allianz Football World Trip Florian Bauer and assistant executive of Corporate Communication of the National Insurance Co Bhd Kerwyn Wong.
"We are happy that Brunei is selected as one of the country for the Allianz Football World Trip. Being a small county, this will put Brunei on the map in the world of football and we hope that Brunei can be part of this again in the future," said National Insurance Co Bhd general manager Kolja Klawunn.
The objective of this project is to use it as a platform for the international football community to get together and communicate by sharing knowledge and interacting which will help to improve the qualities of life through football.
