Two-time defending champions Indera took down Tabuan Muda (national Under-23 football team) 2-0 at the Balapan Track and Field of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas to jump from fifth to third.
Meanwhile at the Tutong Sports Complex, MS ABDB moved from sixth to fourth after Mohd Fadhli Hj Salleh scored a brace to beat Kilanas FC 2-0.
Both teams are level on six points with the same goal difference.
Tabuan Muda - who are to represent the country at next month’s Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Singapore - are still second in the league with seven points from five games, trailing Najip I-Team by two points.
Their game against Indera was marred by poor crosses, but the latter proved why they are the tournament’s defending champions with two magical deliveries in each half.
Given too much space to cross, Indera winger Ak Mohd Azrul Ariffin Pg Hj Metussin punished Tabuan Muda whopping in a spectacular cross met by a towering header from Sam Frank to lead 1-0 at the 10th minute.
It was Frank’s first goal for his new club after moving from QAF FC.
Tabuan Muda started the second half better but poor deliveries continued as neither teams made any clear cut chances until Indera midfielder Muhd Nurikhwan Othman’s stroke of genius.
In the 68th minute, he drew in Tabuan Muda’s defenders and sent a sublime through pass to the unmarked Hamizan Aziz Sulaiman who blasted Indera’s second goal of the night.
Tabuan Muda showed glimmers of breaking through the flanks but Indera’s rock solid right back Muhd Alif Hj Mahdini killed any hopes of a Tabuan Muda miracle.
Indera head coach Hj Omar Hj Jamil was ecstatic with the victory and their resolute 4-5-1 formation.
“I can confidently say we controlled the midfield with five players in the centre and our lone striker also held the ball well,” added Hj Omar.
The coach vowed to keep fighting on to improve themselves to defend their title and be champions again after winning in 2013 and 2014.
